OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has claimed an energy breakthrough is necessary for future development of AI, which he said will require much more power than the industry initially expected. Altman, who was recently ousted and rehired at ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, said the only way forward for AI are the climate-friendly nuclear fusion or solar power.
Does Altman provide energy to Microsoft?
In 2021, Altman personally provided $375 million to private U.S. nuclear fusion company Helion Energy, which since has signed a deal to provide energy to Microsoft (MSFT.O) in future years. Microsoft is OpenAI's biggest financial backer and provides it computing resources for AI.

Altman touched on AI’s growing demands earlier this week while speaking at a Bloomberg event outside of the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The CEO said powerful new AI models would likely require even more energy consumption than previously imagined.
